Best Food on the Treks
Our trek cooks prepare fresh, hearty meals at every camp and adapt the menu for vegetarian or special diets.
Ranked by National Geographic Traveler as one of the world’s best treks, the Salkantay Trek 5 Days delivers an elite mountain journey through the Peruvian Andes toward Machu Picchu. Departing from Cusco, the trail climbs toward the glaciated Apu Salkantay (6,271m), then descends nearly 3,500 meters through dramatic ecological transitions — from icy glacial moraines to lush cloud forests where the Andean bear roams freely.
Unlike the Classic Inca Trail, this route features open availability without rigid government permit caps or months of advance planning, allowing for flexible booking windows. It serves as a superior alternative for active travelers demanding rugged scenery, rich biodiversity, and deep immersion into Peru’s sacred high-mountain environments.
Travel from Cusco to Mollepata and Soraypampa to start your salkantay trek tour. Hike up to the stunning Humantay Lake before heading to the exclusive Quishwaraniyoc Camp to spend the night in premium domes featuring clear starlight views and direct mountain vistas.

Day 01 of your Salkantay Trek 5 Days sets a magnificent tone for the adventure, transitioning from early morning city streets to the towering snow-capped peaks of the Andes. Today combines scenic driving, hearty buffet dining, and your first high-altitude acclimatization hike toward pristine glacial waters, concluding at an exclusive glamping site under a star-filled sky.
Your professional team initiates hotel pickups in Cusco between 4:40 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. We embark on a scenic drive toward the Mollepata district. Before sit-down dining, a brief stop is made at the official municipal checkpoint where travelers clear the Humantay Lake entrance fee (20 PEN per person). Afterward, you will enjoy a complete, freshly prepared buffet breakfast to fuel up for the morning ahead.
Our private transport continues the journey toward Soraypampa. Due to a localized geological landslide in the terrain, the vehicle safely drops passengers off just shortly before the standard parking area, which falls within the collective Soraypampa perimeter. Here, your guide leads the group through a vital, professional stretching and physical warm-up session to adjust your muscles for the mountain inclination.
The steep ascent toward the spectacular glacial lagoon takes approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours of steady, rewarding walking. Upon reaching the summit (4,200 m a.s.l.), you will be granted ample time to take photos and absorb the magnificent turquoise vistas directly beneath the towering Humantay glacier.
After descending from the lake, a short trek takes us to our exclusive, private base camp at Quishwaraniyoc. A premium, extensive buffet lunch awaits you inside our dining facilities, masterfully prepared by our professional mountain chefs using fresh, regional ingredients to replenish your energy.
Settle down for the afternoon in your premium geometric glamping domes. These custom structures offer direct, unobstructed views of the Salkantay mountain mass. Following a hearty evening buffet dinner, you can enjoy uncompromised stargazing through the transparent panels of your dome, experiencing the bright constellations of the Andean night sky from the comfort of your bed.
Day 02 is widely recognized as the most demanding yet rewarding segment of the entire Salkantay Trek 5 Days. You will conquer massive alpine passes, witness immense glacial fields, and experience a dramatic climate shift as you descend from freezing mountain peaks down into the warm, welcoming canopy of the Peruvian high jungle.
Your team will gently wake you up at 5:00 a.m. with a hot cup of traditional coca tea delivered straight to your dome. This Andean morning tradition helps your body adjust to the altitude and fully awaken your senses. Afterward, the entire group gathers inside the dining facilities to enjoy a substantial, nutrient-rich buffet breakfast, ensuring everyone is thoroughly prepared for the rigorous mountain crossing ahead.
Immediately after breakfast, the uphill march toward the immense Abra Salkantay begins. Standing at an impressive 4,630 meters above sea level, this mountain pass places you directly in front of the snow-capped Salkantay peak, the second-highest mountain in Cusco. Take your time to contemplate the sheer verticality of the active glaciers and participate in brief local rituals to thank the mountain deities for a safe passage.
Leaving the frozen summit behind, you will initiate a steady 2 hour downward hike through rocky moraines to reach Wayracmachay. The landscape begins its rapid transformation here, swapping cold mountain winds for softer valley breezes. Upon arrival at our designated rest point, a comforting and warm buffet lunch prepared by our professional chefs will be waiting to replenish your energy levels.
The final leg of the afternoon takes you deeper into the high jungle environment until you reach the Chaullay Camp. Here, you will settle down into your private, custom-built panoramic huts. These exclusive structures provide a highly comfortable and sheltered environment, allowing you to relax while enjoying beautiful, uncompromised views of the surrounding green cloud forest landscapes.
Day 03 of your Salkantay Trek 5 Days introduces you to the lush biodiversity of the high jungle valley. Today perfectly blends active hiking with cultural immersion and optional high-adrenaline or deep-relaxation experiences, concluding at a premium dome camp surrounded by organic plantations.
Fuel up with a complete morning buffet breakfast at the Chaullay Camp before hitting the trail. Your journey continues with a steady downward trek, entering a vibrant landscape rich with wild orchids, bromeliads, and bamboo forests as you follow the course of the rushing river valley.
Arrive at the plantation fields to participate in an interactive, hands-on coffee experience. You will actively engage in the traditional elaboration process, learning how to pick, manually roast, and grind the beans from scratch to prepare and taste one of the finest, richest organic coffees in the region.
Gather with your expedition group to enjoy a freshly prepared afternoon buffet lunch. Our professional mountain chefs arrange a diverse selection of hot local dishes, providing the perfect energy boost to prepare you for your choice of afternoon activities.
Customize your afternoon with two highly recommended optional experiences. Thrill-seekers can soar above the canyon canopy on a high-flying zipline circuit. Alternatively, you can head to the volcanic pools of the Cocalmayo Hot Springs, which offer the ultimate soothing soak to relax your muscles after days of intensive trail walking.
Regroup at the exclusive Lucmabamba base camp to indulge in a refined evening buffet dinner. After dining, retire to your private, comfortable geometric domes. Fall asleep enveloped by the smooth, natural sounds of the high jungle environment while enjoying premium accommodation comfort.
Optional Activity Add-Ons: the Zipline excursion is available as a pre-booked add-on for 25 USD per person during your reservation process. Admission to the Cocalmayo Hot Springs is an independent optional fee paid directly on-site at the entrance gate. Both activities are fully optional but strongly recommended for recovery.
Day 04 of your Salkantay Trek 5 Days stands out as a phenomenal historical and visual milestone. You will climb an authentic, original segment of the Inca Trail to discover a hidden archaeological site that offers an exclusive, distant view of the world wonder before walking into the vibrant town base below the citadel.
Enjoy a complete morning buffet breakfast inside your premium dome camp before setting off. Your trek immediately gains elevation as you ascend through lush cloud forest vegetation along an authentic, beautifully preserved stone section of the ancient Inca Trail, heading toward the mountain ridge.
Arrive at the archaeological site of Llactapata, a unique Inca observatory built directly opposite the world wonder. From this exceptional mountain vantage point, you will contemplate a rare and breathtaking panoramic view of the Machu Picchu citadel and Huayna Picchu from the southwest, entirely free from the standard tourist crowds.
Following your historical guiding session at the ruins, you will initiate a continuous downward hike toward the Aobamba River basin. Upon reaching the Hidroeléctrica station area, the group will stop at a local rest point to enjoy a delicious, freshly cooked mountain lunch, perfectly designed to restore your energy for the final flat walk of the day.
The final segment of the afternoon consists of a flat, scenic walk running parallel to the train tracks and the Urubamba River. Enveloped by towering green mountains and semi-tropical jungle canopy, this peaceful trail leads you straight into the colorful and bustling town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo).
Upon arrival in town, check into your room at a comfortable 2-star hotel to refresh and unpack. In the evening, the group gathers for a delicious sit-down dinner. Your professional guide will conduct a vital briefing session here, detailing the exact schedule, entry circuits, and essential recommendations for tomorrow’s monumental visit to the Machu Picchu sanctuary before you head to sleep.
Difficulty Note: this is officially rated as the second most challenging day of the entire 5-day expedition due to the combined initial ascent and the total multi-terrain distance covered. Adequate rest during the evening is highly advised.
The grand finale of your Salkantay Trek 5 Days has arrived. Today, you will stand before the legendary Inca citadel, unraveling its architectural mysteries and history before embarking on your selected return journey back to the city of Cusco.
Your day begins before dawn at 4:00 a.m. with a delicious breakfast served right at your hotel. Fueling up early ensures the group is fully energized and ready to head toward the checkpoint for the definitive approach to the historic sanctuary.
You will embark on an intensive 1.5 hour upward trek to Machu Picchu, cutting through the switchback roads via the official pedestrian path. This steep trail challenges your stamina with approximately 1,600 ancient stone steps, leading you directly to the main entrance gates of the complex.
Enter the citadel to witness a wonderful sunrise over the iconic green peaks. Your professional guide will lead a complete, comprehensive walking tour through the main circuits, sharing marvelous vistas and detailing the history, architecture, and true reason for being of this sacred Inca sanctuary.
If you added an extra peak (like Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain) to your booking, your guide will direct you safely to the designated entrance trailhead for your self-guided climb. If no extra mountain is included, you will descend back toward the base to initiate your selected return route to Cusco.
After your tour, walk back down to Aguas Calientes and board your afternoon train (2:30 p.m., 2:55 p.m., or 3:20 p.m., subject to availability). The train travels to Ollantaytambo, where our private driver picks you up for a direct transfer. You will arrive back in Cusco by 7:30 p.m., dropping you off one block from the main square. Total travel time is 4 hours.
After your tour, descend to Aguas Calientes and hike back along the railway trail for 3 hours (approx. 10 km) to Hidroeléctrica. You must arrive at Hidroeléctrica before 2:30 p.m. Our driver will be waiting there to take you on a 6.5 hour drive back to Cusco, arriving around 9:30 p.m.
Salkantay Trek 5 Days offers two price packages, determined by the return route you choose after visiting Machu Picchu: return by train (Aguas Calientes → Ollantaytambo → Cusco) or return by car (Aguas Calientes → Hidroelectrica → Cusco). This is the travel guide for your Salkantay Trek 5 Days. Here you can see how to prepare for this tour: the local climate, the best ways to acclimatize, why bringing your passport and travel documents matters, information about your Machu Picchu tickets, when it's best to book, the type of terrain and trail conditions along the route, the altitudes you'll face, and details about signal, Wi-Fi, and electricity.
When deciding on the ultimate approach to Machu Picchu, travelers frequently weigh our Salkantay Trek 5 Days against the traditional stone paths. The choice comes down to your personal travel style, booking flexibility, and what you want to experience along the way. While the classic path is deeply historical and lines up continuous archaeological ruins, it is also heavily regulated by government permit caps that often require booking half a year in advance.
In contrast, our Salkantay Trek 5 Days provides incredible booking flexibility and focuses heavily on dramatic geographic transitions, soaring glaciated peaks, and immersive outdoor luxury like our premium dome camps. If you want to explore the detailed historical aspects, permit structures, and seasonal availability of the classic route before making your final decision, you can review our full guide for the Classic Inca Trail 4 Days to compare pricing and reservation windows.
The towering mass of Mount Salkantay reaches an altitude of 6,271 meters above sea level, making it the second-highest peak in the Cusco region and a vital guardian deity in local Andean mythology. Long before it became a global icon for adventure tourism, this indomitable mountain governed local weather patterns and water resources, serving as a highly revered pilgrimage site for the Inca empire. Its vertical ridges and fragile ice cornices also made it one of the most formidable challenges for global mountaineers throughout the twentieth century.
The summit was conquered for the first time on August 4, 1952, by a courageous joint French and American expedition team who overcame severe weather and exposed ice faces. Decades later, local mountaineers made history when Cusco native Luis Crispín achieved the first official Peruvian ascent in June 2013. You can read the detailed historical climbing logs and route documentation preserved in the official American Alpine Journal Digital Archives. Understanding this rich history of mountaineering endurance adds a profound layer of respect to every step you take during your Salkantay Trek 5 Days.
The delicate alpine punas and sub-tropical cloud forests encountered on the Salkantay Trek 5 Days form a vital ecological corridor. This territory is protected under state laws to guarantee the survival of endangered native wildlife, including the spectacled bear, the majestic Andean condor, and the bright cock-of-the-rock. However, this beautiful ecosystem faces severe environmental threats due to global climate change and accelerating glacier retreat.
Official monitoring reports indicate that the Salkantay glacier mass has lost over 60% of its original ice cover over the last forty years, directly impacting water security for local agricultural communities. To mitigate these modern threats and control tourism impacts, the Peruvian government enforces strict environmental regulations across the territory. Hikers can review the regional protection frameworks, wildlife monitoring sheets, and environmental guidelines enforced on the SERNANP Protected Natural Areas Portal. Adhering to these strict state-level protocols is why our company practices zero-waste principles and participates in active route remediation efforts.
Succeeding on a 5-day salkantay trek tour requires conscious, responsible preparation. Because the trail climbs above 4,600 meters at the Salkantay Pass on Day 2, physical conditioning and proper hydration are mandatory to prevent acute altitude sickness. Hikers should maintain a steady, unhurried pace, drink plenty of water, and communicate any physical discomfort or fatigue to the guiding team immediately so they can deploy safety protocols.
Practicing responsible trail etiquette ensures that these ancient paths remain clean and pristine for future explorers. All participants on our Salkantay Trek 5 Days must strictly adhere to the international Leave No Trace philosophy, which means carrying out all personal refuse, minimizing single-use plastics by using water filtration flasks, and respecting wildlife habitats. Additionally, if you use trekking poles to stabilize your descent on the steep mountain paths, they must always be equipped with protective rubber tips to avoid chipping away or damaging the natural terrain and ancient paths.
The most common questions about the Salkantay Trek 5 Days: difficulty, pass elevation, cold nights, luggage, Machu Picchu tickets and the return to Cusco.
The Salkantay Trek is moderate to challenging. The hardest day is Day 2: about 22 km and 9 hours of hiking over the Salkantay Pass at 4,630 m. Day 4, also 22 km, is the second hardest.
If you hike or climb stairs regularly for a few weeks before the trip, you will handle the route well. More in our guide to Salkantay Trek difficulty.
The Salkantay Pass sits at 4,630 m (15,190 ft) and is the highest point of the trek. On Day 1 you already reach 4,200 m at Humantay Lake and sleep at about 4,000 m in Quishwaraniyoc.
Plan at least 2 full days to acclimatize in Cusco (3,350 m) or the Sacred Valley before you start.
Our Salkantay Trek 5 Days covers about 70 km (43 miles) on foot. Day 1: 6 km (5 h), Day 2: 22 km (9 h), Day 3: 16 km (6 h), Day 4: 22 km (9 h), Day 5: about 4 km up to the citadel plus the guided tour.
At the first camp, at about 4,000 m, nights drop to around 0 °C (32 °F), and below freezing in the dry season. The rainy season is barely warmer. From Day 2 onward, in the cloud forest, nights get much milder.
Bring a hat, gloves and warm layers; you can rent a sleeping bag from us for 15 USD.
The mules carry up to 7 kg (15.4 lbs) per person, sleeping bag included. You receive the duffel bag at the briefing the evening before, at 6:00 p.m. in your hotel, and we store the rest of your luggage in Cusco for free.
You only carry a daypack of about 30 liters.
Yes, the Machu Picchu ticket (Circuit 2) and the guided tour of the citadel are included in the price. If Circuit 2 is sold out, we contact you with the best available alternative.
You can add Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for 60 USD, only with the train return.
You choose between train and car when you book. By train you leave Aguas Calientes in the afternoon (2:30, 2:55 or 3:20 p.m.) for Ollantaytambo and reach Cusco around 7:30 p.m.; with this option the tour costs 410 USD.
The car option is cheaper (330 USD): a 10 km walk to Hidroeléctrica and a 6.5 hour drive, arriving around 9:30 p.m. If you have an evening flight, take the train.
The five day route is less rushed and adds the Inca trail to Llactapata, with a view of Machu Picchu, plus a night in the panoramic huts of Chaullay.
If you are short on time, the Salkantay Trek 4 Days is the shorter option.
The best months are the dry season, May to September, with clear days and starry skies over the domes. April and October are good shoulder months.
January to March is the rainy season: the cloud forest trails get muddy, but the orchids bloom. More in Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu.
We recommend booking 3 to 4 months ahead. Salkantay needs no permit like the Inca Trail, but Circuit 2 tickets and the afternoon trains often sell out months in advance from April to June.
If you want the train return, book especially early.
Choose the Salkantay Trek for glaciers, a 4,630 m pass and more flexible booking; choose the Inca Trail for Inca ruins all along the way and the arrival through the Sun Gate. The Inca Trail needs permits that often sell out months ahead; Salkantay does not.

The trail itself needs no permit, and some hikers walk it on their own. Then you organize transport, lodging, food, luggage and your Machu Picchu tickets yourself, with nobody at your side if the altitude hits you.
With us, guide, cooks, mules, camps and entrance are already taken care of. More in our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu guide.
Until the Salkantay Pass on Day 2 you can turn back, and our guide arranges your safe return to Cusco. The guide always carries a first aid kit and emergency oxygen.
Once you recover, you can rejoin your group at Machu Picchu by train or via Hidroeléctrica. Extra transport costs apply; we handle the logistics.
