Alpaca Beanie or Chullo: Which One to Choose

A beanie is a close fitting knitted cap with no earflaps, made for everyday cold. A chullo covers the ears and ties under the chin, which makes it the better choice for high treks and windy nights.

Baby Alpaca or Alpaca Blend Beanie

Baby alpaca is a fineness grade of 20.1 to 23 microns under Peru’s standard NTP 231.301:2014: very soft and free of itch. An alpaca blend mixes alpaca with other fibers, so it is tougher and cheaper. Each product page states its exact fiber.

Why an Alpaca Wool Beanie Keeps You Warm

Alpaca keeps its warmth even when damp and has no lanolin, the wax that makes some sheep wool feel scratchy. That makes an alpaca wool beanie a good everyday hat for cold cities and mountain trips.

Read more about the fiber in our guide to the chullo and alpaca grades.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alpaca Beanies

Is alpaca wool itchy?

Fine alpaca is usually not itchy. It has no lanolin, and baby alpaca fibers of 23 microns or less are well below the thickness that makes skin prickle. Coarse alpaca and llama can still scratch, which is why the grade matters.

Are alpaca beanies warmer than wool beanies?

Alpaca keeps its warmth when damp and feels lighter than many wool hats. We found no lab measurement that proves an exact figure, so we never claim “three times warmer”.

How much does an alpaca beanie cost?

Our beanies are knitted in 100% baby alpaca and cost from US$21 to US$35.

How do I wash an alpaca beanie?

By hand in cold or lukewarm water with wool shampoo, pressing the water out in a towel and drying it flat in the shade. Never use a dryer, because alpaca felts and shrinks.
